The Program
The Story County Active Learning Experience (SCALE) class is a hands-on course offered to local high school students through Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). The program allows students to gain real world experience with local companies as they complete projects for real clients, helping them learn about professionalism and how to meet deadlines.
The Process
Sigler is proud to have been involved in this program since its developmental stages, sitting in on meetings to discuss curriculum and other course goals.
At the start of each semester, Sigler creates several design and marketing projects for the students to team up on and choose from, ranging from internal work such as online “printables” for the Sigler website and company greeting cards, to real life client work. Depending on the project they choose, the students are paired up with a designated Sigler designer to meet with them for check-ins, offer feedback and help them make adjustments to their work. Sigler also provided the software training necessary to complete their projects, including Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign – two systems that are commonly used in graphic design.
The Progress
We have been extremely impressed with the professionalism and communications skills exhibited by the students, and we’ve seen noticeable improvements throughout each of the semesters.
