Let’s Get Literal (LGL) is a fun, interactive series of designs based on “literal” interpretations. LGL combines several things we love – clever concepts, design collaboration and creating campaigns that delight and engage people – and it’s up to the end-user to guess and check their answers at LetsGetLiteral.com.

Sigler's LGL 2021-22 calendar theme is HOMOPHONES (words that sound the same but have different meanings.) It utilizes the same 4 spot-color inks throughout to unify the unique aesthetic of our talented designers.

May 2022

In Heather's words:

For the homophone Sew / Sow, my idea for a design came together quickly. My father is a master at propagating plants and flowers and while he passed down the love of all things that grow to me, I'm certainly not very good at it! Likewise, my mother is an excellent seamstress, yet I can barely thread a needle! So, I decided to combine these two hobbies as an homage to my folks.

I found a stock illustration of a nice little arrangement of flowers and adjusted the lines and fills to mimic stitched threads. I then created a heathered gray t-shirt texture as the background and added a subtle drop shadow to the elements to make it seem as if the stitches were popping up from the page. To enhance the effect, I had the main elements embossed so they truly would be pushed up from the background.

By adding the needle and thread, I felt it was a solid hint that I was visually representing the act of sewing. To represent "Sow," I created the little watering can and seeds in the same style and placed them above the flowers to round out the composition.

Hope you enjoy the design!
