Let’s Get Literal (LGL) is a fun, interactive series of designs based on “literal” interpretations. LGL combines several things we love – clever concepts, design collaboration and creating campaigns that delight and engage people – and it’s up to the end-user to guess and check their answers at LetsGetLiteral.com.
Sigler's LGL 2021-22 calendar theme is HOMOPHONES (words that sound the same but have different meanings.) It utilizes the same 4 spot-color inks throughout to unify the unique aesthetic of our talented designers.
In Tony's words: Turning this year’s HOMOPHONES theme into a work of art was either going to be really easy or really hard for me. If I chose something I had to look up the second meaning and spelling of, creating a design out of it that’s both visually pleasing and easy to identify would make it more challenging. But since I chose something that was of personal interest to me… the ideas started flowing that much easier.
My goal was to pick two words that I knew right away how to represent as an illustration, and since I’ve always been a fan of the medieval time period, knight/night was the clear choice. By starting with a concept I enjoyed, I was happy to spend extra time working on alternate versions, perfecting all the little details and getting opinions on which layout and elements worked best.
On the press
As an apparel designer, I don’t usually work on designs that are part of a series – typically just typography or a single image on a garment. With the Let’s Get Literal calendar project, I get to incorporate backgrounds, use more colors and utilize special printing effects like the foil used to accentuate the knight’s suit of armor. Since I don’t normally get to play around with print design, this project is always a lot of fun for me. It gives me an opportunity to really express myself, showcase what I'm capable of and push my designs even further. It feels amazing. I hope you love it as much as I do!
